When a business faces digitalization, the same question always comes up: buy standard software or have a custom solution built?

When Standard Software Is Enough

There are excellent standard solutions for many tasks:

  • Accounting: QuickBooks, Xero, FreshBooks
  • Email & Calendar: Microsoft 365, Google Workspace
  • Project Management: Asana, Monday, Notion
  • CRM: HubSpot, Salesforce

If one of these solutions covers 80% or more of your requirements, standard software is usually the right choice.

When Custom Software Makes Sense

Custom software is worth it when:

  1. Your processes are unique: No standard tool maps to your workflow
  2. Integration is needed: You need to connect multiple systems that don't talk to each other
  3. Efficiency is critical: Manual workarounds cost you time every day
  4. Competitive advantage: The software IS your business model or differentiates you

The Middle Ground

Often the best solution is a combination: standard software for the foundation, custom development for the last 20% that makes the difference.
